Children's Eye Care

Its extremely important that you take care of your eyes. Eyes cannot lie, about our feelings, our health and about our age. And since up to 80% of the information we receive from the world comes to us through our eyes, it is vital not to neglect them. The general advice is simple:

    • wear specs (or contacts) if you have poor eyesight,
    • don't sit close to the TV,
    • read under a good light,
    • take off your eye make up at night
    • and eat lots of carrots.

But there is much more you can do to protect your vision, banish circles under your eyes and keep them beautiful...

Eye check

According to Prevent Blindness America, one in every 20 preschool-age children, has a vision problem that, if left uncorrected, could lead to permanent loss of sight.

The World Health Organization recommends that every child have a professional eye exam shortly after birth, by six months of age and again just prior to entering school; then, once yearly after that.

Some tests performed during an exam include:

  • Acuity Test — Reading letters or characters with each eye to test sharpness. Vision from far and near is checked.
  • Refraction — A series of lenses are looked through to determine the best correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
  • Ophthalmoscope — Examines the inside of the eyes to test for cataracts, diabetes, hypertension, etc.

Children have a tough time recognizing whether they have a vision problem because they have no basis for comparison. There are several key signals that indicate vision problems:

    • Rubbing of the eyes.
    • Complaining often of headaches.
    • Squinting.
    • Holding objects unusually close or far away.
    • Excessive blinking.
    • Favoring one eye by covering it or turning the head.
    • The eyes are not aligned or are not working together.
    • The eyes are red or swollen,
    • Your child's experiences with recurring infections on the eyelids.
