Think
of a Hugh walnut. Some people say that's what your brain looks like.
Stretch
out your hands to your head and feel the hard bone, called your
skull. Like the shell of a walnut , this bone protects the soft
brain inside. By the time the person reaches six years of age, the
brain has reached its full weight of about 1.4 kilograms. It is
full of millions of tiny cells which let you think, feel, remember
and control your body movements. The cells in your brain are never
at rest. They are at work all the time, even when you are asleep
Brain
cells are different from the other cells in your body, which can
mend themselves if they are hurt. Brain cells can't do this - and
once they are worn out they can't be replaced either. You have had
most of your brain cells when you were born, when you get old you
may find it very difficult to remember things. This is natural and
one of the reasons is because you have lost many cells that you
once had.
The cerebellum, the largest part, controls brain movement
and balance. It is divided into 2 halves. The
right half controls the left side of the body and left half controls
the right side. It coordinates information from the eyes, mouth,
ears, skin, nose and makes sense of it and helps control how we move
speak and think. The medulla at the top of the spinal cord deals
with things that go on without your knowledge like breathing, digesting
food etc. The spinal cord is made up of the nerve fibers. Through
this medium the brain sends messages to receive information from
the rest of your body. Each message takes a fraction of a sec, to
get to the destination.
The
hippocampus helps you remember stuff, that’s what you call
your memory.
The
pituitary gland is another part in the brain. It produces
substances called hormones for your body. Hormones help in the growth
and development of your body.
The
hypothalamus is placed in the center of your brain. It helps
in maintaining your body temperature.
Another
important part of the brain is the nervous system. The nerves
although are not exclusively present in the brain. They are present
all over the body and are a different story by themselves too. Your
brain is the control center of your body. It receives messages from
all the parts of your body- and sends back messages in reply. Messages
between your brain and other parts of the body move fast . They
can zip up from your feet and back again more than 30 times in one
second.
